What is a 1X2 bet in football?
A 1X2 bet is a bet on the result of a football match after normal time. 1 means the home team wins, X means a draw and 2 means the away team wins. You pick one of the three outcomes, and only that outcome pays. It is also called the match result or full-time result market.
How does a 1X2 bet work?
The 1X2 market is the most common bet in football (soccer). The team listed first is the home team, so “1” is always the home side and “2” is always the away side. “X” is the draw.
| Final score | 1 (home win) | X (draw) | 2 (away win) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2-1 | Wins | Loses | Loses |
| 0-0 | Loses | Wins | Loses |
| 1-1 | Loses | Wins | Loses |
| 0-2 | Loses | Loses | Wins |
| 4-3 | Wins | Loses | Loses |
The score margin does not matter. A 1-0 and a 5-0 both settle “1” as a winner.
How do 1X2 odds work?
Each of the three outcomes has its own price. Here is an example match in decimal odds:
| Selection | Decimal odds | Implied probability (1 / odds) | £10 returns (stake × odds) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 (home win) | 1.90 | 52.6% | £19.00 |
| X (draw) | 3.50 | 28.6% | £35.00 |
| 2 (away win) | 4.20 | 23.8% | £42.00 |
| Total | 105.0% |
A £10 bet on the home win at 1.90 returns £19 if it wins: £9 profit plus your £10 stake. The same maths works in dollars.
The three implied probabilities add up to 105.0%, not 100%. The extra 5% is the bookmaker’s margin. It means the prices are a little shorter than the true chances, on every outcome.
How are 1X2 bets settled?
Rules vary between bookmakers, so always check the terms, but these are the usual ones:
- Normal time only. The bet is settled on 90 minutes plus stoppage time. Extra time and penalty shootouts do not count.
- Cup ties. If a cup match is 1-1 after 90 minutes and the home team wins 2-1 in extra time, the 1X2 bet settles as a draw (X).
- Postponed or abandoned matches follow each bookmaker’s own rules, which often void the bet if the match is not completed within a set time.
That cup rule catches many people out. If you want to bet on which team goes through, look for a separate “to qualify” market.
Why is the draw so hard to predict?
The draw is the outcome bettors back least, yet it happens often. In many top leagues, roughly a quarter of matches end level. Draws are hard to call because one goal at any point changes the result.
Some factors that can make a draw more likely:
- Two evenly matched teams with similar form and strength.
- Low-scoring sides. Fewer goals mean more 0-0 and 1-1 results.
- League style. Draw rates differ from one league to another.
- Match context. A point can suit both teams near the end of a season.
No set of stats makes a draw, or any result, certain.
What alternatives to 1X2 reduce risk?
Because 1X2 has three outcomes, you lose whenever either of the other two happens. Some markets cover more than one result at a lower price:
- Double chance covers two of the three outcomes: 1X (home or draw), X2 (draw or away) or 12 (either team wins).
- Draw No Bet refunds your stake if the match is drawn.
- Asian handicap gives one team a head start in goals and removes the draw from many lines.
Each of these pays less than the matching 1X2 selection, because it covers more outcomes. Lower risk always comes with a lower price.
