What does BTTS mean in betting?
BTTS stands for Both Teams To Score. A BTTS Yes bet wins if each team scores at least one goal, for example 1-1 or 2-1. A BTTS No bet wins if at least one team fails to score, such as 0-0, 1-0 or 3-0. The match result and total goals do not matter.
How does a BTTS bet work?
BTTS is one of the most popular football (soccer) markets because it is simple. You are not picking a winner. You are only answering one question: will both teams get on the scoresheet?
| Final score | BTTS Yes | BTTS No |
|---|---|---|
| 0-0 | Loses | Wins |
| 1-0 | Loses | Wins |
| 1-1 | Wins | Loses |
| 2-1 | Wins | Loses |
| 3-0 | Loses | Wins |
| 3-2 | Wins | Loses |
Notice that a 3-0 is a high-scoring game, yet BTTS Yes still loses because one side did not score. A 1-1 is a low-scoring game, yet BTTS Yes wins.
How are BTTS bets settled?
Rules vary slightly between bookmakers, so always check the terms, but these are the usual ones:
- Normal time only. The bet is normally settled on 90 minutes plus stoppage time. Goals in extra time and penalty shootouts usually do not count.
- Own goals count. An own goal counts for the team it is credited to, so it can make BTTS Yes a winner.
- Postponed or abandoned matches are handled under each bookmaker’s own rules, which often void the bet if the match is not completed within a set time.
Some bookmakers also offer variations, such as BTTS in the first half, BTTS and Over 2.5 goals, or BTTS combined with a match result. These pay higher odds because more things have to go right.
How do BTTS odds work?
BTTS is a two-way market, so it is easy to read. Imagine a match priced like this:
| Selection | Decimal odds | Implied probability (1 / odds) |
|---|---|---|
| BTTS Yes | 1.80 | 55.6% |
| BTTS No | 2.00 | 50.0% |
| Total | 105.6% |
A £10 bet on BTTS Yes at 1.80 returns £18 if it wins (£10 × 1.80): £8 profit plus your £10 stake. The same maths works in dollars.
The two implied probabilities add up to 105.6%, not 100%. The extra 5.6% is the bookmaker’s margin. To make a bet worthwhile over time, you would need a good reason to think the real chance is higher than the implied one. In this example, that means believing BTTS Yes happens more than 55.6% of the time in games like this.
What is the difference between BTTS and Over 2.5 goals?
People often compare these two markets, but they answer different questions:
- BTTS Yes needs both teams to score. The total can be as low as 2 goals.
- Over 2.5 goals needs 3 or more goals in total. One team can score all of them.
| Final score | BTTS Yes | Over 2.5 goals |
|---|---|---|
| 1-1 | Wins | Loses |
| 3-0 | Loses | Wins |
| 2-1 | Wins | Wins |
| 1-0 | Loses | Loses |
BTTS tends to suit matches between two attacking sides with leaky defences. Over 2.5 can suit matches where one strong team is expected to score several goals against a weaker one.
What stats help you judge a BTTS bet?
Useful things to check before a BTTS bet:
- Scoring rate: how often each team scores at least once, especially in home or away games as relevant.
- Clean sheets: how often each team keeps the opposition out.
- Failed to score: how often each team draws a blank.
- Head-to-head history: whether past meetings between the two sides tended to see both teams score.
- League averages: some leagues produce far more BTTS results than others.
- Team news: a missing striker or first-choice goalkeeper can shift the picture.
No combination of stats makes a BTTS bet certain. A late goal or a missed penalty can flip the result in seconds.
